TerraPower Receives Approval to Build First Advanced Nuclear Plant in U.S.

TerraPower, a nuclear energy startup supported by Bill Gates, has been granted federal approval to begin constructing its first power plant in Wyoming. This marks the first time in almost a decade that a new commercial nuclear reactor has received the go-ahead in the United States.

Landmark Approval

On Wednesday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) unanimously voted to approve TerraPower’s construction permit, signaling a major step forward for the company’s ambitious project. The startup aims to deploy smaller, more efficient nuclear reactors that can accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The Natrium plant is expected to begin operations no earlier than 2031.

Addressing Energy Demand and Cost Concerns

TerraPower’s CEO, Chris Levesque, called the approval “a historic day for the United States nuclear industry.” The company claims its reactor design offers significant advantages over traditional plants: it is designed to be faster and cheaper to build. Previous nuclear projects in the U.S. faced severe cost overruns, with the last two reactors built costing $35 billion each and significantly exceeding schedules.

Innovative Design Features

The Natrium reactor uses liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water, reducing pressure and simplifying shielding requirements. This approach could dramatically lower construction costs. The plant will also feature integrated battery storage, allowing it to adjust electricity output on demand – a capability absent in many older nuclear facilities.

This development arrives at a critical moment, as U.S. energy demand surges, particularly due to the rapid expansion of data centers needed to power artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The Trump administration has previously identified nuclear power as a key solution to meeting these rising energy needs.
